From PQC Uncertainty to an Actionable Roadmap

From PQC Uncertainty to an Actionable Roadmap

Post-quantum cryptography is not a challenge that can be solved with a single product and the complexity of this reaches across governance, cryptographic assets, public key infrastructure and certificates, mission risk, technology operations and migration readiness. That breadth can make it difficult for organizations to know where to begin. That’s why PQC is a key topic in Cybersecurity Awareness Month as we prepare for “the Next 250 years.”

1.      Start with Current State

The first step is determining where cryptography is used today and how prepared the organization is to change it. The Red River PQC Accelerator creates a practical starting point. It begins by helping stakeholders understand what PQC is, why the transition matters, and which industry or regulatory requirements may shape the journey. From there, the focus moves quickly from awareness to the enterprise’s own environment.

The Accelerator assesses readiness across the domains that influence a successful transition and identifies known vulnerabilities and dependencies. But it also exposes something equally valuable: the unknowns. Cryptography may be embedded in applications, infrastructure, devices, cloud services, software libraries, identity systems, partner connections, and vendor-managed products. If the enterprise cannot see those dependencies, it cannot confidently protect or migrate them.

2.      Translate Discovery into Risk Prioritization

An inventory is not enough to give leaders a path forward. The Accelerator connects technical findings to mission impact, data sensitivity and longevity, exposure, dependencies and migration complexity. This distinguishes the cryptographic issues that present meaningful business risk from those that can be addressed through existing or upcoming plans for modernization.

That distinction matters because every organization has limited time, funding and technical capacity. A risk-based view helps teams focus first on critical systems, sensitive information that must remain protected for years and dependencies that could constrain future migration.

3.      Build a Roadmap Around Organizational Needs, Not Products

Once priorities are clear, the Accelerator maps actions across near-, mid-, and long-term horizons. Near-term actions may strengthen governance, expand cryptographic discovery, engage strategic suppliers and identify pilot opportunities. Mid-term actions can align PQC requirements with application roadmaps, infrastructure refreshes, PKI modernization, contracts and architecture standards. Long-term actions sequence production migrations and create repeatable processes for sustaining cryptographic visibility and agility.

The roadmap also accounts for what the organization already owns. Existing platforms, security programs, modernization initiatives and vendor relationships should become part of the solution rather than parallel workstreams. Where new capabilities are required, Red River can connect the right combination of ecosystem partners to fill the specific gaps identified during the assessment.

4.      Create Momentum with Next Steps

You don’t need perfect visibility in order to begin. Organizations simply need a structured way to establish a baseline, document unknowns, prioritize risk and assign ownership. A focused readiness effort can produce immediate actions while informing longer-term investments and decisions.

The Red River PQC Accelerator is designed to provide that structure. It turns a complex, multi-domain challenge into a clear understanding of the current state, the gaps that matter most and an actionable path toward PQC readiness.
